Into the Archives: Queen Victoria's opening of the Great Hall and Library
In 1845 Queen Victoria opened the new Great Hall and Library building at Lincoln's Inn.
By the 1800s, both the Old Hall and the Library had become too small for the Inn’s needs. It was decided that a new building was needed, and architect Philip Hardwick was given the task of designing it. His plans are held in the Inn's archives along with fascinating details about the opening of the new building by Queen Victoria which we uncover in this edition of Into the Archives.

Too Many on the Victoria (1881)
The Victoria was no stranger to holiday crowds and on Victoria Day, May 24, 1881, many people had traveled between Springbank Park and the city of London Ontario up and down the Thames river. The river was notoriously shallow, enough that people would joke about boats traveling up and down it grounding on oyster cans, but a grounding was exactly what had happened to the Forest City, meaning that it was no longer available to carry passengers. The burden now fell on the remaining three steam riverboats to bring the holiday crowds back and forth.

History From the Archives Episode 3: VICTORIA, The ship that circumnavigated the world
One of the most famous ships in the history of navigation, the Victoria, was the only one from the five vessels of the Magellan Armada which successfully completed the circumnavigation of the world. Despite its global and perpetual fame, almost nothing is known about its origin and its fate after its return to Spain. Based on archival documents recently discovered by a number of Basque historians whom I also personally interviewed, and my personal visits to the actual places connected with its historic existence, this episode will provide startling details on this ship which remained unknown to most historians for the last five hundred years.

Danilo Madrid Gerona's Profile:
A Filipino historian focusing on the early Spanish colonial history in the Philippines, he wrote numerous books and articles on various aspects of national and local histories. As a Magellan scholar, he authored Ferdinand Magellan: The Armada de Maluco and the European Discovery of the Philippines, acclaimed by both Filipino and foreign scholars as one of the most authoritative works on the subject. A lecturer in numerous national and international conferences in history, he is also a member of Philippine and European committees on the Magellan celebration and an accomplished historical painter.
